Christine Young LAA Showcase

Christine Young

This JBC Showcase features the award winning medical illustration of Christine Young. Christine was the recipient of the Association of Medical Illustrators’ 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the Awards Ceremony at the AMI's annual meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia.

The AMI Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor awarded by the Association of Medical Illustrators, and is awarded to an individual who has dedicated his or her professional life as a medical illustrator. In doing so, this individual has engaged with fellow illustrators, not only to support the ideals of the profession, but also to ensure that it thrives, progresses, and advances the Association.

Christine’s incessant curiosity about life science and medicine has served as a constant companion to her passion for drawing and painting. After college and several years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, she earned her master’s degree from the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with an internship at the Mayo Clinic.

For the past 20 years, Christine has focused on visually translating structural molecular biology, intimate disease processes, and innovation in biopharmaceutical products for medical animations and media through the craft of verbal/visual integration in storyboards. Her experience spans a vast number of therapeutic areas including immunology and antibody engineering, oncology, neuroscience, genetics, vaccines, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Christine has spoken at the Philadelphia Science Festival and has given lectures on the value of biomedical visualization in medical education and biopharmaceutical product commercialization. In addition, she teaches Visual Learning & Visual Thinking, Animation I, and Business Practices, and mentors master's research projects with graduate students in the Biomedical Visualization program at University of Illinois at Chicago. She has served the Association of Medical Illustrators as President and as a former Editor of the Medical Illustration Source Book.
