Author Biography

Philipp Gutbrod

 Philipp Gutbrod was born in 1971 in Rochester, NY. He studied art history, classical archaeology, and jurisprudence in Heidelberg and Munich. He took his PhD in Heidelberg with a dissertation on the artist Wols (Catalogue Raisonné), funded by a Postgraduate Scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. In 2003- 2004 he held a research position for “French Art in Postwar Germany / German Modernism in France after 1945†at the German Center for the History of Art in Paris, and taught at the Freie Universität in Berlin. From 2005 to 2011 he was Managing director of the New York office of Villa Grisebach Auctions and a lecturer at museums in North America. Since July 2011 he has been Curator and Collection Manager at the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt. Gutbrod has published numerous essays on art of the 20th century with a focus on parallels between art and music. He has curated numerous exhibitions, among others: “IT'S ALL ADVERTISING! Poster Art of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony†(2012) and "Ankabuta's Web" (2012).
