Focus and Scope

The primary intellectual framework for Behavior and Social Issues is the science of behavior analysis and its sub-discipline of cultural analysis, but contributions from contrasting viewpoints will occasionally be considered if of specific interest to behavior analysts. We recommend that potential authors examine recent issues to determine whether their work is appropriate to the journal. Appropriate contributions include theoretical and conceptual analyses, research articles and brief reports, dialogues, research reviews, and book reviews. Behavior and Social Issues is an appropriate forum for the work of senior scholars in the field, many of whom serve on the editorial board, as well as for the work of emerging scholars, including students, who have an interest in the contributions of a natural science of behavior to constructing cultures of social justice, human rights, and environmental sustainability.

Peer Review Process

The journal is particularly interested in publishing work related to issues with social justice and human rights implications, but all significant social issues are of interest. The journal serves as a nexus for the development of an intellectual community interested in these areas, which receive only modest attention in most behavioral outlets despite their potential importance for society. The primary intellectual framework for Behavior and Social Issues is the natural science of behavior. Most accepted contributions will therefore emphasize behavioral, behavior analytic, and cultural analytic approaches, but contributions from contrasting viewpoints will occasionally be considered if of specific interest to behavior analysts. Appropriate contributions include theoretical and conceptual analyses, research articles and brief reports, dialogues, research reviews, and book reviews. Behavior and Social Issues is an appropriate forum for the work of senior scholars in the field, many of whom serve on the editorial board, as well as for the work of emerging scholars, including students, who have an interest in the contributions of a natural science of behavior to constructing cultures of social justice. The journal, published twice a year, is sponsored by Behaviorists for Social Responsibility. Behavior and Social Issues is committed to a timely, respectful, blind, and constructive review process. Every effort is made to complete the review process in 60 days or less, and to hold publication delays for accepted manuscripts to under one year. Manuscripts should strictly follow formatting guidelines established by the American Psychological Association. Appropriate length should be determined by content; a guideline of 20-30 double-spaced pages is suggested.

Publication Frequency

Beginning with the 2009 Volume, articles accepted for publication in Behavior and Social Issues will be immediately published online.

Open Access Policy

Behavior and Social Issues is an open-access journal. All journal content from the first (1991) volume, with the exception of a small amount of reprinted material which we have been unable to get permission to reprint digitally, is available online without cost at www.behaviorandsocialissues.org. In addition, consistent with recommendations developed by Create Change, Behavior and Social Issues is no longer requiring transfer of copyright for articles published, but is rather using a non-exclusive license for publication. Our authors, who maintain copyright, can therefore also distribute their material in any other forms they may wish.
