Gamification for Education of the Digitally Native Generation by Means of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Machine Learning, and Brain-Computing Interfaces in Museums

Abstract

Particularly close attention is being paid today among researchers in social science disciplines to aspects of learning in the digital age, especially for the Digitally Native Generation. In the context of museums, the question is: how can rich learning experiences be provided for increasingly technologically advanced young visitors in museums? Which high-tech platforms and solutions do museums need to focus on? At the same time, the software games business is growing fast and now finding its way into non-entertainment contexts, helping to deliver substantial benefits, particularly in education, training, research, and health. This article outlines some aspects facing Digitally Native learners in museums through an analysis of several radically new key technologies: Interactivity, Wearables, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality. Special attention is paid to use cases for application of games-based scenarios via these technologies in non-leisure contexts—and specifically for educational purposes in museums.

Author Biographies

Olga Barkova

Olga Barkova is the deputy director of the Specialized Centre BALI, LTD (Kiev, Ukraine); Vice-chairman of The Technical Committee for standardization of Ukraine TC 144 Information and documentation; Scientific employee of the National Center Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Coordinator in Ukraine of several Europeana Foundation projects (2013-2015) — Linked Heritage (https://pro.europeana.eu/project/linked-heritage); AthenaPlus http://www.athenaplus.eu); and, EuropeanaPhotography (http://www.europeana-photography.eu). She holds a Ph.D. in Information Technologies. Olga is a specialist in ICT for education, science, culture and digital heritage spheres: information technologies and systems, software development, research, management, teaching and training. She has many years of experience working in state information institutions and commercial companies as a scientist, computer engineer, and ICT technologist, manager of projects, head of departments, and manager of training events. She collaborates with universities, memory organizations, and international projects in Europe and the United States on information services, technologies and systems, and, in recent years, for Digitized Heritage, carrying out professional training.

Natalia Pysarevska

Natalia Pysarevska is the director of the KPI State Polytechnic Museum. Prior to obtaining this position, she served as deputy director at the Museum of Ministry of Internal Affairs, head of exhibitions department at the National Museum of History of Ukraine, and as a member of ICOM of Ukraine, Universeum. She is currently managing publication of the Eminent Ukrainian Engineers book series. Her main interests are public understanding of science include the preservation of cultural heritage and ideological uses of history. She is in charge of museum activities and contact with foreign institutions, and is also a TED speaker.

Oleg Allenin

Oleg Alienin is a lecturer, software developer, and expert in computer science. Oleg graduated from the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (NTUU KPI).

Serhii Hamotsky

Serhii Hamotsky is a student and software developer. He is studying computer science at the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (NTUU KPI).

Nikita Gordienko

Nikita Gordienko is a student and software developer. He is studying computer science at the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (NTUU KPI). Nikita has successfully participated in various international science contests and was a Google Science Fair Regional Finalist as well as winning the INTEL-TECHNO Award for Achievements in Computer Science.

Vladyslav Sarnatskyi

Vladyslav Sarnatskyi is a student and software developer. Vladyslav is studying computer science at the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (NTUU KPI).

Vadym Ovcharenko

Vadym Ovcharenko is a student and software developer. Vadym studied computer science at National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (NTUU KPI), and now he is studying for his Master’s degree at the University of Illinois.

Mariia Tkachenko

Mariia Tkachenko is a student and software developer. Mariia is studying computer science at the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (NTUU KPI).

Yurii Gordienko

Yurii Gordienko is a professor in the Computing Engineering department at the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechic Insitute (Kyiv, Ukraine). He holds Doctor of Science and Ph.D. degrees. He has participated in several IT-related collaborative projects of the European Union (FP7) in various technical roles.

Sergei Stirenko

Sergii Stirenko is a professor and head of the Computing Engineering department at the National Technical University of Ukraine Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechic Insitute (Kyiv, Ukraine). He holds Doctor of Science and Ph.D. degrees. He has participated in numerous IT-related collaborative projects of the European Union in both technical and management roles.
